The aim of the Institute for Volunteering Research is to develop knowledge and understanding of volunteering in a way that is relevant to practitioners and policy makers. The site provides an outline of the work of the Institute as well as detailed summaries of research that it has undertaken.

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the volunteer arm of the United Nations which supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism. It is universal, inclusive and embraces volunteer action in all its diversity. It values free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity, which are the foundations of volunteerism.

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations is the national body representing the voluntary sector. It seeks to advance the values and shared interests of the voluntary sector by voluntary organisations by fostering co-operation, promoting best practice and delivering sustainable services.

CAN is the UK's leading organisation for the development, promotion and support of social entrepreneurs. The CAN team and members aim to deliver high quality community projects in more or less every field of social change and service delivery, from homelessness to schools and from healthcare to recycling.

SenScot is an independent network that is specially aimed at individuals working in frontline social enterprises throughout Scotland. Their mission is "to build and operate an independent network with the scale and momentum to drive an expanding social enterprise sector in Scotland."

Awards for All is a Lottery grants programme aimed at local communities. It awards grants of between £500 and £5000.

Since June 2004 the New Opportunities Fund has come together with the Community Fund to create a single new lottery distributor - the Big Lottery Fund. It will continue to fund for charities and the voluntary sector and health, education and the environment.
