Enable Family Advice Service

Enable Family Advice Service provides Information and Advice for people with learning difficulties and their carers. The service aims to ensure that people with learning difficulties have access to the same opportunities in life as everyone else.

Opportunities available vary depending on needs. Examples include, administration duties, database design and management, interpreting services or benefits advice work.

The Service is looking for people with a positive attitude to people with learning disabilities and sympathetic to the values and goals of the organisation.

ENABLE has active Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Volunteer Policies. 6 weekly meetings are held incorporating in-house training linked to the needs of volunteers.



Playcare Project - East Renfrewshire Council

The Playcare Project will support the work and provision of Play schemes and out of school projects. Volunteers will be supported and trained to provided playcare to children with disabilities, in a number of locations in East Renfrewshire. Travel Expenses will be provided but not snacks and meals. Training will be provided, such as First Aid, Lifting & Handling, Information on Autism and any other training thought suitable. Volunteers will be encouraged to develop skills and access proper training which meets the aims and objectives of the Project and the delivery of Playcare. To volunteer for this opportunity you may apply on our standard application form. References will be taken up and you will be interviewed along with having a criminal record check in compliance with the Children's Act. If you are over 17 and like working with children, this could be the opportunity for you. East Renfrewshire Council's Playcare Project aims to support and develop Playcare Projects within East Renfrewshire area and to develop additional resources which meet the needs of children affected by disability. Volunteers would be expected to provide Playcare support to children with various needs. This will be achieved by undertaking a variety of tasks, such as, supporting children with personal care, art activities, playing, escorting to the cinema, etc. There may also be some outreach work supporting the families of the children. This volunteering opportunity will also encourage volunteers to access training, with the intention that volunteers form management committees which then organise and plan their own resources. The opportunity may also result in 'sessional work'. Volunteers do not require specific skills, however, patience, common sense, understanding and an awareness of disability are preferred. Especially welcome would be volunteers with any skill which would appeal to children, such as drama, arts, music or sport, but this is not essential.




RSVP Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme

RSVP provides out of pocket expences i.e. milage allowance, bus fares and snacks should you be taking a patient out. There is both public liability and personal accident insurance cover whilst engaged in volunteering. To volunteer for this project you may apply using our standard application form (apply online here), references will be taken up and you should expect to be interviewed by the projects local organiser. Training, if required, will be provided.

If you are over 50 and live in or around the Barrhead and Neilston areas, this could be the opportunity for you to receive a great deal of satisfaction in helping others, who are now in need of some assistance.

RSVP provides opportunities for older people to engage in stimulating voluntary activities which enhance the services in their communities, also recognising their skills. Volunteers would be required to provide some of the following services:

BEFRIENDING:

  • Talking and listening to someone in their own home.
  • Assisting someone to the shops when they do not have the confidence to go on their own.
  • Keeping someone who is housebound up to date with local news.
  • Taking someone out for a short walk who is unsure on their own.
  • Helping to fill forms or give advice on where to get more Information.
TRANSPORT:
  • Bringing a patient to the surgery.
  • Escorting patients to the hospital for appointments.
  • Taking someone to visit their sick relative in hospital or nursing home.
  • Taking a keen bowler, who is now unable to participate, to watch a match.
  • Assisting patients, who enjoy going to the shops, but are unable to go on their own.
  • Take a patient out on an occasional day trip.
Some of our volunteers also visit the elderly in ward 39 at the RAH in Paisley.
The Primary Care Project works in conjuction with the local Healthcare Co-operative.

Young Persons Services Section

Young Persons Services Section of East Renfrewshire Council support Voluntary Youth Organisations, youth committees and Forums, run Youth Clubs, deliver a School Leavers Programme and other services aimed at developing youth work and services throughout the area.

Volunteers would help to develop and expand youth work programmes and develop positive relationships with young people. As a volunteer, you would work alongside other staff in supervising and undertaking activities such as baking, computing, quizzes, arts and crafts, drama, tuck shop, pool etc.

Volunteers may access the same training opportunities offered to sessional staff (e.g. first aid, counselling and youth work SQA modules.




Thornliebank Resource Centre

TRC provides day care services for adults with learning disabilities, some of whom have physical disabilities.

As a volunteer you would gain experience in adult care and with people who have varying disabilities.

Volunteers will be asked to participate in groups as part of a daily programme. These include community groups which encourage interaction and socialisation, computing, baking, gardening and other hobbies. There may also be involvement with other organisations such as colleges and other professions.

Volunteers should have good communication skills, preferably with experience of working with individuals with disabilities, but more essential attributes are patience, understanding and a sense of humour. Expenses will be paid and relevant training provided. Supervision and support will be available as required. Volunteers may expect references to be taken with an informal interview and a trial period.




Action on Dementia

Action on Dementia based in Barrhead, would like volunteers to work alongside care staff offering support and assistance to people aged 65+ who have dementia, with varying degrees of physical disabilities.

Volunteers will be involved in group work offering activities to help in maintaining existing skills, escorting to and from transport and rooms in the centre and personal care i.e. continence management and meal time assistance

Volunteers are paid travelling expenses.

Action on Dementia invites all its volunteers to take part in their 2 day Basic Training Course covering Dementia, Challenging Behaviour, Continence Management, Communication, Dignity and Carers needs, we also offer Moving and Handling, First Aid and Food Hygiene.

The centre operates between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and provides breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.




Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Blind

Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Blind require volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds and ages (of over 16 years) to become involved throughout West Central Scotland.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Visiting visually impaired people in their homes on a regular basis
  • Befriending and escorting visually impaired people out and about
  • Providing information and advice at hospital help desks
  • Art galleries or other places of interest
  • Administrative/organisational support to the Society or Social Clubs for the visually impaired.

Times and activities are arranged to suit both parties.

All volunteers receive training in visual impairment awareness.




The Womens Royal Voluntary Service

WRVS works in partnership with the local authority or NHS trusts to be the prime provider of volunteer care in the community. Emergency, Hospital, Food, Community and Welfare Services are provided.

Examples of volunteer work in hospitals include flower arranging in wards, running shops/cafe, library/book trolley, reception and guiding services.

In the community, WRVS run Meals on Wheels services for the elderly and housebound, Books on Wheels, a Stroke Club, Child Contact Centres (which allow neutral meeting places for families) and a Social Driving Scheme, providing door to door transport for people who find some journeys difficult.

WRVS also support young soldiers both at home and abroad by providing recreation clubs and a listening ear.




East Renfrewshire Womens Aid

East Renfrewshire Womens Aid provide support and information to women experiencing domestic abuse (e.g. counselling, group support, along with a drop-in and telephone service). Women's Aid brings the issue of domestic abuse to wider public attention as a way of taking steps against abuse.

To volunteer, you must be a woman over 18 years of age, a good listener and sympathetic to other people's problems. Office administration and counselling skills would be helpful but are not essential. Volunteers will be paid traveling expenses and meals will be provided in the event of a full day-session being required.




Age Concern Eastwood

Age Concern Eastwood is operated entirely by volunteers, providing friendly personal services to the elderly in the area with the following services:

Day Care Centres, Advice Centre, Wheelchair loans, Visitor Service, Care phone Service, Dementia Support.

Volunteers with humour, tolerance, an enquiring mind, an ability to relate to older people and good listen skills are always welcome.

You may chose which area you would like to work in and specific training will be provided where needed. Volunteers are needed mostly during normal working hours and a minimum of a couple of hours per week is expected. As it takes a few months to become fully effective, there is an expectation to volunteer for a minimum of 3 months.




One Plus

One Plus is an organisation for one parent families, working with various partners to tackle the poverty facing one parent families by creating services, training and employment in communities. The service aims to bring lone parents together to promote policies which improve opportunities for them and their children.

Opportunities exist in the Resource Centre and occasionally in other areas of One Plus such as administration and One plus Projects. As duties are mainly clerical in nature, computer skills or clerical experience would be an advantage, but not essential, as training will be provided.

Expenses will be paid, including childcare, travel to the Glasgow based office and lunches.




Barrhead Citizens Advice Bureau

Barrhead Citizens Advice Bureau provides generalist advice and information to all sectors of the community. Its overall aims are to ensure that individuals do not suffer through ignorance of their basic rights and responsibilities and to influence policy and decision makers. The Bureau empowers people to tackle their problems by providing advice and practical support on any subject.

Volunteers are very highly valued. 90% of CAB workers in Scotland are volunteers, as advisers, admin workers or management committee members.




The Media and Millennium Volunteers Project

The Project aims to create volunteering opportunities for people aged between 16 and 25 years and from any background and ability by involving volunteers in the running of a multimedia project.


The project will provide...

The project will provide a volunteer led service to community and voluntary organisations throughout East Renfrewshire by:-

  • Providing community access to equipment and technical knowledge

  • Recording special events within the community for historical and archive purposes

  • Training volunteers in media techniques and digital technology

  • Ensuring community links to other resources

  • Assisting with the development of video conferencing links with other groups and individuals both within and outwith the community

  • The creation of community websites, which service local groups and organisation


The project will seek...

The project will seek to develop a programme of workshops and other training courses and events for volunteers. The programme would be rooted in the community and will foster and promote a broad training and educational focus, through working with local community groups, training bodies and colleges.

 
Three Main Benefits of the Project

  1. Involving volunteers within an environment dedicated to good volunteering practice - recruitment, training, support and progression. Volunteers will benefit from tackling new challenges, accessing new networks and friends developing both a sense of achievement and longer-term goals.

  2. The local community will benefit via easy access to East Renfrewshire wide resources such as colour printing, e-mail, web and other digital technology. Strong links within the local community will result in an increase in the production of quality newsletters, leaflets, posters and electronic publications. The local community will be able to book access to the facility and resources during off-peak times.

  3. The voluntary sector throughout East Renfrewshire will benefit from this project but especially those voluntary organisations and groups within the Levern Valley Partnership areas.

The Media and Millennium Project is currently looking for volunteers to carry forward all aspects of the projects aims.To volunteer with the project you must be aged between 16 and 25, willing to learn new skills and work with a wide range of people within the wider community.
